Is it possible to use gel stain on top of acrylic lacquer clear coat?

I would like to know the feasibility of using a gel stain on top of an acrylic lacquer clear coat. I have a piece of furniture made of pine with an acrylic lacquer clear coat and would like to stain the piece a different color. It isn't worth it to strip the piece, so I only want to know about coatings which could be applied over the acrylic lacquer (if any).

If a stain is possible, then what would be a suitable topcoat to seal in the stain? More acrylic lacquer? Is it possible to use gel stain on top of acrylic lacquer clear coat?
Look for something like what we used to call a ';varnish stain.'; You will have to scratch the surface a bit, but that should add the color that you want. Stain will not penetrate through the wood if it is sealed and laquer will seal it.Is it possible to use gel stain on top of acrylic lacquer clear coat?
no it won't work
you can't stain lacquer clear coat, you have to stain the wood
The stain has to soak in to the wood. The lacquer clear coat would prevent this. You must strip the piece prior to applying the gel stain.

As for a top coat acrylic lacquer is easy to apply and dries fast so you can apply several coats in one day. It is not as water resistant or as durable as polyurethane or urethane.
