When getting braces, how much extra on average does it cost to get the clear acrylics vs. regular metal ones

I might have to get braces...but they will look horrible on me...so I want to know how much the acrylic clear ones would be compared to the regular metal ones

How much more would the acrylics cost on average? When getting braces, how much extra on average does it cost to get the clear acrylics vs. regular metal ones
a better choice then acrylic would be ceramic

its about 300 more i got metal on the bottom row and ceramic on top and honestly lots of people dont even notice that i have braces!

EDIT: another advantage of ceramic is that although it's clear, it doesn't stain! When getting braces, how much extra on average does it cost to get the clear acrylics vs. regular metal ones
my orthodontist costs like 500 - 1000 more. Depending on how your teeth are you might have to get normal braces before. Like they wouldn't give me the clear ones because of the way my teeth are. I thought i would look terrible with braces and i just got mine on and really theyre not that bad i can tell you that.
im getting silver because they dont turn a gross color like clear but were i went it cost 600 dollars more but it depends on where u go i went to Arkansa
We don't charge extra in my office anymore, but it used to be about $500.00 more.

Is the deluxe acrylic with sealer coat and polyurethane clear coat good for a paint job?

I see two auto body shops advertising these paints and clear coat deals in the newspaper and was wondering if these were good stuff for the low price. They are asking about $299-$349 for the paint, sealer, and polyurethane clear coat. And the $299 deal comes with a 4 year guarantee. I am just looking for something to freshen up my car and not going for a custom, show car paint job. I am also planning to sand and primer it myself or should I just let them spray it? (My car is white)Is the deluxe acrylic with sealer coat and polyurethane clear coat good for a paint job?
Is Deluxe the brand or just a description. It sounds very cheap. With paint, you really get what you pay for.

If you are just wanting a average white paint job, I would go to a auto paint store and get an acrylic enamel white paint. You should be able to get a gallon of paint with reducer and harder for $200 - $250. If you are just repainting (no body work) and your old paint is not peeling then you shouldn't have to use primer or sealer. Just wet sand with 400 grit and paint right over the old paint. With acrylic enamel you don't have to mess with a clearcoat. Is the deluxe acrylic with sealer coat and polyurethane clear coat good for a paint job?
    I hate ';clear coat';

    It fades, peels, and cracks.

. Sanding and primering yourself is a good idea.

What clear solid surface can I peel acrylic paint off! I have used shipping plastic, need a solid sheet?

I am making paintings (fine art) that can be painted and lifted like large decals. I have used 6 mil shipping plastic, This works great, but is hell to format and non-permanent. I need to identify and locate a more stable substitute. (Clear plastic sheeting; large solid sheets that watersoluble paint will peel off of.)

I would think the same thing tupperware is made of (polypropylene), but cannot find it in flat clear sheets. Does anyone know what the clear painters pallettes are made of (melamine?) and if it is sold in sheets to the public?

I have been trying to put a finger on this for over 2 years--any help or leads out there?

thanxWhat clear solid surface can I peel acrylic paint off! I have used shipping plastic, need a solid sheet?
Poly carbon Lexan would work well. My husband was the plant manager for a place that made clear bottom kayaks and that it what they used. It comes in different thicknesses and is bulletproof. One of my hubby's fav tests for the buyer was to take a 12 lb sledgehammer and beat on the kayak to show how strong it was. It is also very lightweight. The whole kayak only weighed 38 lbs. I did the graphics on them and the acrylic should peel off nicely. If you would like more info go to my profile and e-mail me. Good luck! What clear solid surface can I peel acrylic paint off! try some of your local sign painters. They have a lot of strange plastic sheets that they do signs on. I buy one type that you can stick to a car window and remove. I put signs on them so I can remove and reapply. That might even work. You could adhere it to a piece of glass ...do your paint application....let it dry and then remove.

Mylar from an art supply might work...
get a sheet of glass my friend and tape the edges in a good duct tape-also you can go to a plastics store and buy sheets of acrylic. Different thickness', different prices of course-buy something small-you can also go to crafts stores to buy pre-cut to use instead of glass in frames-check it out, I bet it will work. Worth a couple $$ to know-
Glass is good. Prepare the surface with a undiluted liquid soap wash and let that dry. Across that you do a quick layer of medium or any color you want. Quick is the key as you don't want to mix it with the soap to much. Let it all dry and do your thing.

It isn't the read-made solution you were looking for but this works very well.
Check out Home Depot or Lowes if you have one around. Plenty of things there.

WONDERING IF I CAN WET SAND AND APPLY CLEAR COAT.HELP....I JUST PAINTED MY TRUCK WITH ACRYLIC ENAMEL, IT IS EXTREMELY ORANGE PEELED..CAN I WET SAND AND CLEAR?
You can do what ever you want, but if you simply sand and clear coat, you'll have orange peal under clear coat...probably not the look you were going for.

Simply put, you screwed up the surface preparation or application of the paint. Time to strip and do it right.HELP....I JUST PAINTED MY TRUCK WITH ACRYLIC ENAMEL, IT IS EXTREMELY ORANGE PEELED..CAN I WET SAND AND CLEAR?
Yes,you can do that. The simplest and safest way to make it right would be to water sand it smooth with 400 grit. Then respray it with the color again. This time use a quality slower drying reducer and more of it.Spray at a higher pressure and apply a couple thin wet coats.
wet sand and then buff with fine rubbing compound to restore the gloss. acrylic enamel is not intended to have clear on it

Acrylic Nails... White Tips or clear?

Last time i got acrylic nails they used a white tip. my friend gets the white painted on. which one is better?

Thanks!!Acrylic Nails... White Tips or clear?
The white tips will look good at first but once they grow out, or if you break one, they don't look so great. I would stay with the clear.Acrylic Nails... White Tips or clear?
Tips or Painting the white on, it's not done right. The right way is White Acrylic %26amp; Pink Acrylic. They put the white on first then they put the pink on. Nails Set, only put Clear Nail polish on. Salons %26amp; Spa's do them. They cost a little more, but you fill them once a month.

White tip grows out %26amp; looks goofy. Go with clear.
Just get the pink and white full set next time. They look better and the white tip does not turn yellow. It is a little more for the pink and white but is very worth it.
When I get acrylic nails put on I always get the white tip! I had the white painted once and within a few days it started to chip and look terrible.
White tips are classy - pink tips are youthful and more demure.
i think if the white is painted on, it looks more natural than if the white is already there.

    Clear, drink-safe sealant for acrylic?

I'm going to be building a model of a cup I designed out of stacked, lasercut acrylic pieces (I'm taking a SolidWorks model, slicing it horizontally, and building the cup from those slices). Ideally, this cup will be actually useable, which would require that the acrylic be somehow sealed in a way that is both watertight and non-toxic.

I have had experience with using acrylic solvent to create strong bonds between pieces, and I think that I could make it watertight if I'm careful- but are there any toxic chemicals still present after the stuff dries?

The other way I've thought of is to use aquarium-grade silicon, since that is reasonably clear and is both watertight and nontoxic- but it's also very thick, and a thinner formula would be far better suited for my purposes.

Has anyone used one of these methods before? Does anyone know of any sealants that fit my needs?

Thanks for any help you can give.Clear, drink-safe sealant for acrylic?

No, but you will need to prime it if you ever decide to paint over it.

Before I do an oil, I layer two coats of gesso, white, and then acrylic paint mixed with clear matte gel-paste

I suggest you use only two coats of gesso first one thinned down to soak into the canvas then a medium coat to finish let dry before painting -- your finished painting will be longer lasting and have higher appeal. Before I do an oil, I layer two coats of gesso, white, and then acrylic paint mixed with clear matte gel-paste
when using oils you need to size the canvas/support before the gesso. if you dont the oil may sink into the weave and cause it to rot at some later date. you need to get some caesin size, bone glue size or rabbit skin glue size. try your local hardware store or order some online at www.greatart.co.ukBefore I do an oil, I layer two coats of gesso, white, and then acrylic paint mixed with clear matte gel-paste
Don't use the acrylic paint with oil paint or your painting will crack it about a year. The gesso should be sufficient. Maybe more than two coats though. Gesso is meant to be a primer for everything. That's all you need.
no need for acrylic paint 2 coats of gesso is enought u use acrylic colored if u want to do a colored base only

Do i need some type of clear coat on acrylic paint?

I am painting ornaments made out of clay. I got them form a arts and crafts store. They were just plain white clay, and I am painting them with acrylic paint, but i noticed that the clay can scrape away. Is there any type of top coat I should be using?Do i need some type of clear coat on acrylic paint?
Yes, it is always best to seal your work with polyurethane (glossy or satin finish). I do that to all my art work (paintings, slates, crafts, etc.). Polyurethane can be applied with a brush or can be sprayed on (available in convenient spray cans). It not only protects the finish of your work but it also deepens and brightens the colors and gives your artwork more depth.Do i need some type of clear coat on acrylic paint?

Is it possible to use gel stain on top of acrylic lacquer clear coat?

I would like to know the feasibility of using a gel stain on top of an acrylic lacquer clear coat. I have a piece of furniture made of pine with an acrylic lacquer clear coat and would like to stain the piece a different color. It isn't worth it to strip the piece, so I only want to know about coatings which could be applied over the acrylic lacquer (if any).

If a stain is possible, then what would be a suitable topcoat to seal in the stain? More acrylic lacquer? Is it possible to use gel stain on top of acrylic lacquer clear coat?
Look for something like what we used to call a ';varnish stain.'; You will have to scratch the surface a bit, but that should add the color that you want. Stain will not penetrate through the wood if it is sealed and laquer will seal it.Is it possible to use gel stain on top of acrylic lacquer clear coat?
    no it won't work
you can't stain lacquer clear coat, you have to stain the wood
The stain has to soak in to the wood. The lacquer clear coat would prevent this. You must strip the piece prior to applying the gel stain.

As for a top coat acrylic lacquer is easy to apply and dries fast so you can apply several coats in one day. It is not as water resistant or as durable as polyurethane or urethane.

Is it OK to use an Acrylic Lacquer Clear coat over a Urethane Base Coat? Or will it lift/peel/bubble?

I had to get a different hood and bumper after having a little accident. The car is red and the hood and bumper are white. I need to sand down the parts and paint them. The website I am going to get my paint from it http://www.automotivetouchup.com and I guess it is ok to use lacquer over urethane...because that is all they have. But can anyone tell me if that is REALLY ok or not? if you can help me out...thanks a lot.Is it OK to use an Acrylic Lacquer Clear coat over a Urethane Base Coat? Or will it lift/peel/bubble?
Lacquer clear works great over urethane base coat.We tried that as an emergency while working on used cars years ago.It gave excellent results and lasts as well as anything else.We still do that at times because the lacquer clear, when wet sanded and highly polished, looks and lasts great. It's also much cheaper. Is it OK to use an Acrylic Lacquer Clear coat over a Urethane Base Coat? Clear Holes in Acrylic?

    Hey all,

I have just drilled holes in the sides of my acrylic for the leds in my ftir touch screen attempt, but the insides of the holes are pretty opaque, and don't transmit much light. How can I make the acrylic clear inside those holes? I've tried adhesive sandpaper around a dowel, spinning in the drill, like a getto dremel, to no avail. Ideas?

    Thanks!

    --Legs

P.S. not strictly engineering, I realize, but this is the closest category I could find...Clear Holes in Acrylic?
Polishing is a process of using progressively finer grits. First start with something a little coarse (100 or 200 grit) and then halve the grit at each step (200 -%26gt; 400 -%26gt; 800 -%26gt; 1600). Above 800 or 1600 grit, you will be using a polishing paste, not a paper. To use the paste, you apply it directly to the tool, or to a fine cloth.

The holes are probably small, so bending paper around a stick probably won't work too well. You may just have to start with the coarsest paste you can find.

Since these are holes, you may end up burnishing them with a brass or glass rod. Burnishing is different from polishing, in that it uses pressure to smooth down minor rough spots. But the surface needs to be almost smooth to start with.

Another thing you might try are these CD/glasses repair kits. A few of them are acrylic resin, but most are actually a liquid wax with a refractive index close to acrylic. They usually make a very smooth surface. Many of these kits are 2-step. The first being a medium polishing compound, and the second being the wax.

    Edit--

Using acetone to polish acrylic is called ';solvent polishing';. There is also a polishing method that uses heat called ';heat polishing';. Both of these polishing methods impair the structural stability of acrylic and can lead to crazing, which is the fracturing of the acrylic starting near the polished point or edge.

Also, what they didn't tell you in ';How It's Made'; is that the acetone bath is actually a saturated solution of polymethylacrylate in acetone. It doesn't polish the handle, as much as it leaves behind a smooth film of new acrylic when it dries. Then again, I guess they could have been straight up solvent polishing the handles. I have certainly used cheap acrylic screwdrivers that started fracturing for no apparent reason.Clear Holes in Acrylic?
Acetone on a q-tip will melt the whiteness from the hole leaving it water clear and shiny. This will be a lot easier than trying to polish the hole until it is shiny. I saw this done on the show How it's Made. Screwdriver handles made of acrylic were being dipped in acetone to restore the clearness and gloss after a turning process made the outer surface white.

Edit: Wow, someones insecure about their answer! If you want the ten points so bad, fine, you can have them. All I ask Legs is that you try my suggestion on a scrap and see what you think before you waste a bunch of time and money.

I've checked Lowes and home depot online... and I didn;t get anything by searching this but maybe I'm searching wrong....Anyone know where I could get Weld-On #3 to bond acrylic in Houston, TX preferably near Clear Lake?
Google ';hardware stores near clear lake texas'; and phone first

Is there a clear flame-retardant coating I can use on acrylic sheet?

The acrylic sheet is going to melt at about 130掳 C, so coating isn't going to do much for you. If you need flame resistance, you need to look for a polymer designed for those conditions.

What is the difference between a fullset nail, fiberglass, gel, clear, and acrylics?

I want to get my nails done but i don't know which one i should do and what's the difference between them.. help? What is the difference between a fullset nail, fiberglass, gel, clear, and acrylics?
    Heyy.

I get my nails done all the time and choose acrylic.

There isn't really such thing as gel and clear; not very different is what I mean.

Acrylics VS gel; acrylics and gel are basicly the same thing! Acrylics are liquid and powerd and gels don't need mixing; they get dried or whatever by using U.V Lights.

Acrylic nails ar way more stronger and natural looking rather than the GEL! So that's why I prefer acrylic nails...good luck choosing. :D

nothing else is worth your money :)

And yes unfortunately your nails will probably be dry and weak once you take them off, but nails grow out so its worth it :)

And btw, gel is meant to be better for your nails health but its just a scam because they just put it on top of acrylic, meaning absolutely no difference at all

I don't know a website for this, but w/ a good manicurist, clear is best. a person who doesn't know what they are doing will make your nails look cloudy, or even slightly grayish, so check out their work b4 you let them do your nails. some places use a really good flesh tone pink, and sometimes this will look more natural than a clear powder, but you really have to go to the place and see the quality of the work

  • Why did my acrylic clear coat act so funny?

Well i was spray painting my small plastic shelf and did a primer coat. followed with a black gloss. Then i decided to add a clear coat. I got an acrylic clear coat and sprayed an even layer on the shelf. On a fist sized spot on each shelf it looked like the clear coat raised up in tree branch-like shapes. idk how to explain it. its like wrinkles rose up out of the paint(no cracks, it just rose) in treebranch-like manner. whats up with that? looks ugly now..Why did my acrylic clear coat act so funny?
Check your cans of spray paint. It sounds like possibly your black was oil-based, and the acrylic did not adhere to it. Or maybe it wasn't dry enough to be clear coated. Or perhaps maybe a place you touched it to move it and the oils from your hands caused the failure. Why did my acrylic clear coat act so funny?
Sounds like **** ran brah, your clear coat could have run or one of the paints under it could have and when you put on the clear coat it could have magnified it, know what I mean?

Putting acrylic/clear balls on jewelery for still kinda fresh piercings?

I was wondering if I went to a piercer and had him/her change the balls from the silver that came with my curved barbell in my conch to clear, would it be ok/worth it? I have had some people (teachers, boss, etc) make negative comments and mention a retainer but a clear ball that wouldn't attract as much attention is the only thing that I could do until June. I got the piercing done 12/2/08 and my piercer said I can't change out until 6/2/08. What do you think? Will piercers do that? I really only need the one that is on the front/visible part of my barbell in my ear changed, the back is fine, nobody sees it.Putting acrylic/clear balls on jewelery for still kinda fresh piercings?

Glass. Using plexi isn't good because it's a type of plastic and so is acrylic paint--they are going to want to bond to each other. Use glass.Does anyone know of a clear flat surface (specific type of plastic?)that acrylic paint will peel off of?
look in your yellow pages for plastic manufacturers,, you want to find a vacuum form molder, they will have sheets of various plastics,,, also there are several types of silicone sprays in the industry you could try to lightly spray onto your surfaces, some sprays are made to be non paintable (paint wont stick), some sprays are paintable ( paint will stick), have you tried glass?,
I have had some success with stencil plastic, but sometimes the edges get rough when I peel it off. Glass also works.

How do I remove blue protective film covering from my clear acrylic basketball backboard.?

Previous owner never installed or mounted this Porter Official size (6' x 3.5') clear acrylic basketball backboard and also never removed the blue protective film. I just purchased it from him for $50 (original price $1000+). I have been carefully scraping away with a razor; I have tried ammonia, bleach, mineral spirts, Goof-off, 3m adhesive release agent, soap/water, fire (grill fire starter), steel wool (too abrasive). I haven't tried steam or a heat gun. Any suggestions? How do I remove blue protective film covering from my clear acrylic basketball backboard.?
The problem here is that the two aren't that different molecularly. Heat gun and steam could deform and fog the acrylic backboard (low melting point). Anything that would dissolve the plastic covering would get the acrylic (actually, the covering might be slightly more resistant). The only thing I can think of that might help is to allow it to be bombarded by UV (ie: leave it in the sun). The covering might get brittle enough to flake off. Past that, good old elbow grease and time will eventually get it off.

Yes, it is made from acrylic. But I don't think you should use this to seal your oil painting. There's varnish or something that you can buy to I think paint on your paintings to seal them. I've never sealed any of my oil paintings before since I don't really know...what to do... so I hope someone more knowledgeable can help you. Will ';Clear Acrylic Sealer: Gloss'; spray ruin my oil paintings?

I had the same prob as you

pesonally i prefer plastic i think it looks better and you can get more styles

(not that you can see them anyway)

but dont forget to use anti-bacterial sprays and stuff coz if it gets infected it will look terrible with a clear one inI recently got my lip pierced and i need to wear a clear for my job which is better to use plastic or acrylic?
Acrylics/plastics don't cause infections per se, however they are porous materials that can harbor bacteria and are not suitable for unhealed piercings.

Your best bet would be to buy a glass retainer and keep them in until you're healed. Constantly changing out jewelry will only aggravate your new piercing and increase your chance of infection.

Also, since you have an open wound I would suggest taking your new glass jewelry to a local shop and have the piece(s) autoclaved as you never know who has handled the jewelry.

    https://www.bodyartforms.com/products.as鈥?/a>

    http://www.glasswearstudios.com/webpages鈥?/a>

The quartz glass on the BAF site is actually from GWS, but I thought I'd link you to both since GWS offer more retainer options on their site.
Neither get quartz. They are SO much better for healing. Plastic just doesn't sound good and acrylic will harbour bacteria which can cause infection if not cleaned a lot. Quartz is definately the best choice.

  • Why is it that strippers wear those giant clear acrylic platform heels ..is that sexy to men?

I just simply want to state that I feel bad for society with so many people asnwering this question closed-mindedly.

And as for the question, they wear them because high heels arch the back, lift the butt, slenderize the legs, make them look taller,.. all the things that men ';say'; they find attractive in a body. They're taller than normal heels, yes. And they're clear, yes. It just gives a better illusion of long legs and added height.

And people, if you want to make fun of those kinds of shoes.. look at what children are wearing to dances now... the same exact things that they can now buy at Deb or some other such stores in the malls. Criticize what you know, not what you're so afraid of.Why is it that strippers wear those giant clear acrylic platform heels ..is that sexy to men?
I am a man and I don't think that kind of shoes is very sexy. The strippers must think so I guess. Why is it that strippers wear those giant clear acrylic platform heels ..is that sexy to men?
bc they want to look skanky..and men want that for cheap hookup nights, not long-term gfs.
no- and i'm still wondering why beauty pageant contestants and strippers wear high heels with bathing suits.
Chris Rock already commented on this.
okay first not all of us wear those, just some of us, i prefer a black stelleto heal, just depends on what you are wearin on stage depends on the shoe, not all wear the clear shoes
My friends and I dont think its sexy. I dont know why they wear them. They look silly...
well it works.. so i guess it is
They look incredibly cheap, and yes cheap is sexy to guys who want sex and nothing else. Pay no attention.
Same reason a chef wears that goofy hat. It's part of the uniform. Besides a good majority of strippers are not that tall. So they wear those shoes because they give not only more height, but those particular shoes give more stability at those heights. Plus, yes they are, cheap, trampy, whoorish, and SEXY
    hell yes.
To each his own,but that soesn't do a thing for me.

  • How do I remove dried acrylic paint from a clear plastic pallet?

My favorite pallet has dried acrylic paint on it. How can I remove the paint without damaging the pallet? How do I remove dried acrylic paint from a clear plastic pallet?
I've been using old plastic cafeteria food trays (the ones divided into sections) for years as my pallets. Removing the dried out leftover acrylic paint is easy, at least in my case. All I need to do is catch a side of the dried paint (usually just a fingernail does the trick) and peel it up. If you don't want to use a fingernail something like an old butter knife will do just as well. Or even a pallet knife. All you need to do is get the blade under the edge of the dried paint and life it up slightly. Then you can simply peel the paint away from the pallet. How do I remove dried acrylic paint from a clear plastic pallet?
Soak it in the sink- the acrylics will peel off with a little help from you. Then you don't have to scratch it all up---
Scrape it off with a razor. That has to be carefully done but it is about the only way to get rid of the paint. Acrylics are a plastic and once they set there is nothing that will dissolve the stuff.

Regarding your pallet I would say the you will have to carefully scrape it off with a wide razor sharp blade.
What the other two said :) You can take those acrylic scraps and use them for collage. Just use some matte or gloss medium to adhere them to your surface.

    Lynne
Acrylic should just peal right off if it is plastic??? Perhaps it is wood.?. Rubbing alcohol will dissolve acrylic paint eventually. That is how re-modelers check to see if you have oil based or acrylic paint on your wood trim in your house...or they SHOULD. You could also try a stripper.
I pour boiling water over it and let it soak overnight. It peals off in one nice chunk. Kinda fun to do too...
either scrape it up or fill it with water and let it sit for a day or two and then it should just come right off.

What is clear acrylic sealer ? And what could it be used for?

Clear acrylic sealer is sort of like a clear, shiny paint. It can be used over paint as a sealant to keep it protected from the elements. It can also be used in crafts such as pottery in order to seal the final product and give it a glossy appearance. What is clear acrylic sealer ? And what could it be used for?
Clear acrylic sealer has many uses:

    1. Added to acrylic-latex paint= Improves adhesion to chalky surfaces. Use 1 part waterproof/sealer to 20 parts acrylic paint, OR 1 qt. to every 5 gal. paint

2.Used as a water sealant over porous/ non porous material- brick, masonry, vinyl and alum. siding, brickwork. Dries 1-2 hrs.

3.Used on painted/ unpainted surfaces, it insures water- tight finish, also primer for alum. siding.

    4. Interior brick wall sealant.

    5. Used over acrylic paint prevents ';chalking'; affect-

Hope this helps ya !What is clear acrylic sealer ? And what could it be used for?

Should I use adhesive promoter or what should I use?I have a CF hood that I am clearing. I am using acrylic clear. Do I need adhesive promoter?
I'm assuming you are painting over a painted surface already coated with a urethane so yes, use an adhesion promoter because polyurethane coatings have terrible recoat properties. Pick an adhesion promoter that is recommended by the manufacturer of the paint you are using. Also, remember to paint in a low humidity environment.

If you really want it to look good, take it to a paint shop like maaco or something and have them spray it with a clear coat of polyurethane. Acrylic lacquer like what you're about to use will disintegrate (cracks, yellowing, etc...) in a comparatively short period of time.

Taking care of clear acrylic furniture?

How am I supposed to clean clear acrylic furniture? It looks horrible when it gets badly scratched!Taking care of clear acrylic furniture?
Acrylic is a very delicate material, which needs specific care in order to maintain its beauty. Use only a very soft damp cloth when cleaning your product. Use of chemicals or harsh abrasive products (Windex ....) will result in damage. Absolutely no chemicals or cleaning products should be used!

Like all products, it is very important to use the proper cleaning solution to keep your acrylic furniture looking beautiful. We recommend Novus Plastic Polish #2 or Clean master Brillianize. Be sure to apply enough to the cloth and the acrylic surface.

    Scratch Removal:

Like other fine surface's acrylic can scratch, but unlike other materials. Scratches on acrylic can be removed, by using Novus #2 and a cloth Purchasing a restoration kit can remove Deep scratches.

Caution: DO NOT use window cleaning fluids, scouring compounds, gritty cloths, household scouring compounds, lacquer thinner, benzene, solvents such as acetone, keep away from open flame or heat.

How do i clear up some cloudy acrylic?

My aquarium lighting sits on top of some acrylic that has gotten scoured, like someone tryed to clean it at one time with too potent of a cleaner.Would love to let the light thru all the way. Thanks! How do i clear up some cloudy acrylic?
A great product that will remoe the scrathes from the acrylic tank is a product called Novus #2. It will help you you big time and you should have your tank back to looking great again. It is only $5 , so not expensive. Heres the link: http://www.vikingmagiccompany.com/?nd=fu鈥?/a>How do i clear up some cloudy acrylic?
    i do not know
If it was scoured, it's been scratched, creating the cloudiness. Perhaps one of those lens repair liquids that fill in scratches would be helpful. I'm not sure.
Sounds like it was cleaned with an ammonia based cleaner or some other kind of glass cleaner. Most glass cleaners cloud acrylic, and apparently there isn't any way to un-cloud it.

Edit: I've done this to acrylic by accident before so I thought I'd look it up to make sure there haven't been any new developments. Apparently, depending on the cause of the cloudiness, rubbing it with a paper towel covered in canola oil or cooking spray (Pam), has been known to clear it up.

You may get lucky and be able to sand and buff this out. I would allow it to dry a few days before attempting to repair it. It's messed up already so it's worth a try. If it doesn't work, unfortunately, you will have to sand it down and start over.

Which type of iPod case is better: silicone or clear acrylic?

I recieved a black 30gig iPod for Christmas and it's starting to get some minor scratches. I want to buy a case for it to prevent it from getting scratched up any farther. I can't decide whether to get a silicone case or a clear acrylic. I want something that will allow access to the ports and buttons/switches, protect the screen, and keep out dust and stuff that will scratch the iPod even more. Which type of case do you suggest? And if you can suggest specific brands/models of cases, please do.Which type of iPod case is better: silicone or clear acrylic?
I just bought an iSkin eVo3 for my 30 GB iPod and I highly recommend it. It's a little pricey at $34.95 but it's made of high-grade silicone with a hard plastic cover and offers excellent protection while still allowing accessibilty. It's definitely worth it! Here's the link to the Apple Store website if you want to check it out for yourself:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/We鈥?/a>Which type of iPod case is better: silicone or clear acrylic?
A full acrylic case will just end up suffering the same problems as the acrylic face on your iPod (though it is cheaper to replace the case than the iPod). I suggest getting a clear adhesive screen cover and a pretty much any silicone sleeve. One benefit of silicone over acrylic is that it'll also act as a shock absorber if you happen to drop it.
I think that the silicon one should be better.

Most interior woodwork looks best in an eggshell finish, as high-gloss paint can have a rather bleak, deadening effect. If your plan is to paint walls, ceiling, and trim, then it鈥檚 best to get the trim painted first, along with the room鈥檚 windows and doors. Paint woodwork in small sections. Keeping a wet edge to avoid lap marks.

Will clear acrylic retainer be bad for my newly pierced earlobes?

i also use h2o ocean sprayWill clear acrylic retainer be bad for my newly pierced earlobes?
Yes acrylic is bad to have in fresh piercings. Not only will you irritate the fresh piercings [you should only change the jewelry when they're healed] but you'll leave them susceptible to infection. Acrylic is porous so harbors bacteria. Also, rubbing alcohol can break down acrylic, so don't clean that jewelry like that. Will clear acrylic retainer be bad for my newly pierced earlobes?
Yes. Acrylic is a porous material and not very sturdy, especially at a 20 gauge. They are also not long enough to accommodate swelling and are not implant grade material. The only materials suitable for a healing piercing are implant grade metals such as Niobium, titanium and a high-grade surgical steel. Some people can also use quartz glass with success.
I jus came from a tat shop a couple hrs ago because i needed to suggestions on hiding newly piercings for work..and they guy told me its not good to change out any new piercing cuz like ur ears need to get used to the piercing and start the healing process...he says when he take out piercings over and over to change them they can cause scarring possible rotting of the wound and/or infections. So i would say not really a good idea
New piercings should always use surgical steel. Plastic, acrylic, jewels and beads harbor bacteria. Until your ears heal use the surgical steel.

Acrylic Question: What are the ingredient to make Acrylic Clear Plastic and the best place to buy them?

Im looking for Acrylic ingredient and the place to buy them. Since I do not have laser to cut them perhaps I can just pore acrylic liquid to my mold. Custom Acrylic cutter are too damn expensive for me and some do not reply to my Acrylic request and Im tired of it.Acrylic Question: What are the ingredient to make Acrylic Clear Plastic and the best place to buy them?
Cutting through sheets of acrylic ';plexiglass'; is pretty hard to do except for straight lines.

You can use other things to simulate sheets (or shapes) of clear acrylic though... for example, epoxy resin, polyester resin, acrylic/polyurethane resin (usually a bit too dangerous for most hobbyists though), clear acrylic sealers like polyurethanes/acrylic mediums/floor polishes like Future/Mop'NGlo, clear embossing powders, clear fingernail polishes, etc.

Some of those will be less scratchable than others though, or not be UV protected so they'll eventually yellow with too much direct exposure to sunlight/etc, or won't harden quite as smooth as others, etc.

If you want to ';cast'; one of those materials in a removable mold, there are things you'll need to know about what kinds of molds will work, if releases are necessary and which kinds if so, which resins or other materials will work best, etc.

Generally, crafters and artists use *polyester resins* when casting in removable molds because they can be poured deeper than 1/2';. However, the surface of a polyester resin that cures *next to the air* may not be perfect, so the ';front'; of the cast item will be the area which contacted the mold while curing.

Epoxy resins will also produce a clear object (in a removable mold or in a permanent ';cell'; of some kind) or a clear thick coating, but it's not usually used to make things that will be deeper than 1/2';.

On the other hand, epoxy resins are better for lungs than polyesters, and they don't have the problem of the surface next to the air curing imperfectly.

Once those resins cure though, the can be carved and cut but with difficulty (then need to be buffed).

For much more info about using resins, and the differences between them, check out the 3 LINKS in this recent answer I wrote about resins:

Does anyone know how to polish the edges of clear acrylic to make clear or transparent?

This can usually be done with acrylic strips that are at least 1/8'; thick, but no less. I believe the process takes at least six different steps to transform the cut edges of the acrylic to crystal clear. Does anyone know the correct proceedure for accomplishing this technique? If yes, please send your answers to: CreativeIdeas2006@yahoo.com

Thank you for your time.Does anyone know how to polish the edges of clear acrylic to make clear or transparent?
There are two ways. One is to ';Flame'; polish. A propane plumbers torch or a small hand held butane torch will work. It takes a bit of practice, and if you dont move along the edge fast enough you can catch it on fire or melt it. Stay at the tip of the flame.

The other way is to wet sand with silacon carbid sand paper, start with 100 grit about 10 strokes, then 320 grit 10 strokes then 600 grit 15 strokes, keep flushing your sand paper in water and keep the edge of the acrylic wet.

Then put a cotton buff wheel in a drill, put some white buffing rouge onto the buffing wheel(while its turning) then buff the edge making lite level strokes across it, about four or five times, you dont want to heat it while buffing so dont lay into it, and wait in between strokes to let the heat diapate. Last step is a clean new buff to take the grease of the rouge off and bring it to a super clear luster shine. If you heat it to much when buffing it gets a white mare, if so you will need to resand and buff.

In lou of a drill a place called caswell sells a nice 1100 speed standing buffer for about $150.Does anyone know how to polish the edges of clear acrylic to make clear or transparent?
i used to embed photos in acrylic to make key chains using an odd shaped plastic container and shaping it with a grinder when hardened, then buffing with a cotton buffer pad with rosin applied to it.

they looked just like crystals pendants.

you will end up with something that looks very much like frosted glass. it will let in light, without allowing people to clearly see through it.

Here's the issue, there is a clear bass guitar I want, but I don't want to scratch it up. But, there is no place to screw in a pick guard. Tape would look wierd unless there are pick guards for bass guitars without holes in it. Will the acrylic guitar get scratched just like wooden types if I don't put a pickguard on it?Does a clear acrylic guitar need a pickguard?
All guitars get scratched up whether you want them to or not. Beer happens, shows happen, they get dropped, knocked against the drums, bump into mic stands, etc.

I don't think that a bass really needs a pickguard though. Every bass player I've ever worked with either used their fingers or a pick, but didn't strum like a regular guitar.

You shouldn't need one, but if you think that you do, go to hobby lobby and get some clear contact paper, it will be pretty much invisible and it's cheap to replace if you think it starts getting scratched up. And...it won't do any damage to the finish on your bass. I've never used it for a musical instrument but I have used it on the rocker panels of my hot rods to protect the paint from rubber during burnouts.

If it's good enough for my cars, it's good enough for a guitar.

    Hope this helps.

Is it safe to smoke out of a clay pipe if I sprayed clear acrylic sealer on it?

If you're talking about ';earth'; clay (not polymer clay, or another air-dry clay besides earth/pottery/ceramic clay), then you can put hot coals directly on it (whether you've glazed it or not).

You wouldn't want to put hot coals directly on various kinds of plastic though, including acrylic sealers, because they will burn and emit toxic smoke and fumes with much less heat than that.

I want to paint my spindles on my stairs white,I already have 2 coats Clear Acrylic-Urethane Satin, thanks?

With this being an acrylic urethane you can get a product called ';Wil-bond'; it's a liquid deglosser, wipe down areas to be painted and paint, no sanding required. You must read the directions though for use because you only want to prep (wipe down) what you can paint in 30 minutes, how it works is it will soften that urethane for that long, once it starts to harden again it will take the paint and harden that with it so you get a good bond, saves the mess and hassle of sanding, any deglosser , liquid sand will due but I've been using the Wil-bond for over 35 yrs and find it to be the best, good luck Les the painter

You can ,but it will be a lot harder to make a Perfect image . Try it on some scrap paper first. Good Luck ;)))Can I use a clear stamp without a clear acrylic handle?
i have used clear stamps by using them with the top cover of the ink pad (if big enough) and also a clear plastic ruler but remember to make sure that you press down properly on the top of the stamp to get a good result - especially if the top cover of the ink pad is rounded.

It's amazing what you can improvise with when you are desperate.
If you are using them for what I think you are (stamping colors), sure you can, with the likelihood that you will paint/ink the ends of your fingers holding the edges of the stamp block and have to be careful not to touch them to the paper/fabric.

    Edit

On the other hand, if this is what you mean http://www.stampendous.com/stampsfdr/pcs鈥?/a> it would be fairly awkward as the actual image stuff is soft and odd shaped, I thought you meant blocks without raised handles.

Wander down to your local hardware store if that is more convenient than hobby shop and ask if they have any scraps of plastic cut offs from making window panes in plastic. I would use glass, smoothing the edges with a hand grind stone, but I have it around.
No not really. You need a hard flat surface to put them on to stamp down and get a good inked image.. Wal Mart has the clear acrylic blocks cheap.

Where can I buy clear acrylic for a craft project?

Not sure if you want a sheet of acrylic (plexiglass, etc) or you want a clear water-based liquid that would harden and adhere to glass and wood.

It won't be easy finding a *sheet* of plexiglass that thick though unless perhaps you go to a plastics store like Tap Plastics. (I guess you could always stack thinner sheets together, but not sure if there would be visual distortion when as thick as one inch.)

You could use a clear adhesive if you wanted to adhere those sheets to glass or wood... perhaps a 2-part epoxy glue or E6000.

You can use a resin though and create the size and shape you want (all resins are naturally adhesive, though it would be best to seal or paint any bare wood before using with resin since they're porous if not and won't necessariliy look as good.).

For something as thick as 1';, you'd probably want a *polyester* resin rather than an epoxy resin (like ';bar top resin'; or Envirotex Lite) but you'll have to deal with the surface problems they have after curing if you leave the surface exposed to the air while curing.

I also can't tell if you'd want to use a craft polyester resin (like Castin' Craft's Clear Polyester Casting Resin) or if you'd be okay with just the kind of polyester resin more often used for making fiberglass (those are sold at auto stores, boat stores, etc).

You can check out this page at my site though for more info on the types of resin, and what they're used for, lessons, etc, if you're interested:

    HTH,

Diane B.Where can I buy clear acrylic for a craft project?
I would go to your local hardware store like Home Depot, Lowe's. They have all of this and more. Some craft shops may carry acrylic but not always in the size you are looking for. At the hardware shops they can cut it down from a sheet for you and you will find it in different thickness. Good luck
    Let's check this at Amazon.

I would totally try a craft store. Ask them and most of the time they can help you out in finding what you need. Good luck to you.

I am looking for a clear acrylic solid pool cover with truss system, strong enough for people to walk?

strong enough for tables and chairs to be set on the pool cover. I have seen pictures of this at party rental places. I wish to buy the system instead of renting one.I am looking for a clear acrylic solid pool cover with truss system, strong enough for people to walk?
I saw a Hollywood party on TV (on Oprah?) where the party was over a pool on just the type of system you are talking about. I didn't find the exact thing. There is a reference book called Sweets used by designers and architects published by McGraw Hill. It has volumes and volumes of categorized products. The online version is cumbersome, so I didn't attempt it, but check it at your library. Another is the Thomas Register, which is more of a source reference for business and manufacturers.

I wonder if the sytem might be available from companies who specialize in stages. The only ones I saw of this nature were intended to sit on a floor and would not span any distance (though some of the lighting ideas could be cool for your application).

Still, in my search I did find one product that might work. The web page didn't talk about maximum spans or the like. For what its worth, here it is:

http://www.discountdisplays.com/flooring鈥?/a>I am looking for a clear acrylic solid pool cover with truss system, strong enough for people to walk?
The system you are wanting to purchase is a custom built pool cover that uses structural aluminum trusses and brackets. These things are extremely expensive and very time consuming to install and/or remove for storage.

A country club in Virginia that I went to had a similar system... it wasn't clear because the support structure was ugly. It was however very strong and used hardwood sheets as floor covering over a sub-floor. It snapped and locked together and also had a slight arch for added support.

If you have the room for storage, the muscle and people to assist in it's assembly and dis-assembly, and the disposable income to purchase this monster... then start contacting some country clubs and pool warehouses for leads on a company that may fabricate such a thing. Be very careful about warranty and liability for weight and load restrictions.

    Good luck.

  • Has anyone used hair spray or clear acrylic spray to preserve a carved pumpkin?

I read that you can spray a carved pumpkin with hair spray or clear acrylic spray to help preserve it longer. Has anyone used either of these methods? Just wondering if they really work. Seems odd to use something flammable when there will most likely be a lit candle inside. Thanks for any help.Has anyone used hair spray or clear acrylic spray to preserve a carved pumpkin?
I have used petroleum jelly around exposed areas to prevent cracking and to keep it moist. It does help a bit. I also refrigerated it for a few hours a day and soaked it in the sink in cold water when it starts to shrivel a bit. It helps to put moisture back in it. Also, there is a spray that (they claim) is non flammable called Pumpkin Fresh that is supposed to help preserve it - www.pumpkinfresh.com I have never tried it but it sounds much safer than using something potentially flammable. Good luck and Happy Halloween! :-)

What causes clear acrylic to get cloudy INSIDE the surface?

My golf cart windshield has a milky white streak inside the surface and I am not sure where it came from. Any ideas, and any help on how to get rid of it?What causes clear acrylic to get cloudy INSIDE the surface?
You may have got some moisture inside a layer (possibly from a separation). If warming the acrylic (100F to 130F) for some extended time doesn't get rid of that you may have to replace it. ~

Could be a manufacturer's defect and under warranty. What causes clear acrylic to get cloudy INSIDE the surface?
    Happy to help.

Acrylic (Plexiglas) is susceptible to the elements. Exposure is brutal to acrylic over time. Not to mention, a golf ball will go right through it.

Lexan(R) is a polycarbonate plastic that holds up very well to the elements. Golf balls wish they could penetrate it... It is used for the lighted sign faces you see on businesses because of it's durability and clarity.

If you decide to replace your windshield, I strongly suggest that you use Lexan(R) or another brand name of polycarbonate sheet.

Is there a way to permanently attach a photograph to a clear acrylic sheet?

Can the photo be attached so that is can be washed in water or a dishwasher? Is there a way to permanently attach a photograph to a clear acrylic sheet?
You can print images directly onto acrylic sheets using waterproof inks but I doubt if they would survive a dishwasher.

If you want to transfer images to mugs or dishes you'd need to use a heat transfer method. Is there a way to permanently attach a photograph to a clear acrylic sheet?
I wouldn't COUNT on this, but I have some ';laminating pockets'; that I got at WalMart that seem pretty good. They are made by 3M. They have different sizes, including one for ID tags. The thing I like about them is that they do not have adhesive in contact with the image. They are sealed around the edges. You just slide your photo in and press the top together to seal it shut after you're done. I'm sure that they are sold in Staples and other office supply places and probably Michael's and other craft stores, as well.

I don't use them much, but I'm just letting you know that they exist and I've tried them out a few times and they seem to live up to their promise.
